Overview

Starting in Puno, visit the mystical Titicaca Lake and immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of its people.  Continue to the Colca Canyon for a two-night sojourn, visiting the natural and cultural highlights, ending in the city of Arequipa.

Itinerary

Day 1Puno

Arrival in Puno; be it by plane, bus or train and transfer to your hotel in Puno, meals on your own.

Day 2Puno /Uros and Taquile Islands

After breakfast a full day visit to the floating islands of the Uros and then continue on to Taquile Island for a hike and visit to this unusual setting of a cultural immersion into age-old customs and living style. Return to Puno, lunch included, overnight at hotel, dinner on your own. B/L

Day 3Puno/Colca Canyon (Chivay or Yanque)

Leaving the Lake behind we head north on the road to Cusco and Arequipa. Pass by the Sillustani burial tombs located on Umayo Lake, continue past the city of Juliaca and take a detour to Lampa, a beautiful colonial town, one of the few surviving villages with this historic architectural value, specially the main church which contains the only authorized copy of the Pieta of Michelangelo. From here continue to Cabanillas village, and onto the main road to Arequipa traversing arid pampas and high altitude lakes, which, if you are lucky, are teeming with aquatic birdlife including migratory flamingoes, The road then drops into the Colca Valley and the headwaters of the Colca Canyon with its impressive terracing and quaint villages. Lunch on route, arrival at your hotel, dinner on your own. B/L

Day 4Cruz del Condor/ Canocota / Colca (Chivay or Yanque)

Depending on your hotel location, early rise to drive down the Valley which later becomes a Canyon, to the overlook point and watch the Condor, king of birds, rise in flight as the up surging, warm currents rising from the canyon uplift this beautiful bird. After this amazing view, we head back to our lodging visiting villages on the way. Included in the program, there can be short walks or if you request it, walking along ancient trails along the upper valley. (3-hrs. hike) B/L

Day 5Colca Valley/Arequipa

Morning at leisure for optional activities (mountain biking, hiking shopping) and around noon departure, heading over the high pampas to Arequipa – views of vicuña herds are often possible and the volcanoes of the area, to finally reach Arequipa, and its central White City – called so became of the use of its light grey volcanic rock for building purposes of the structures on the inner city. A chance for a walk through the old city, visit museums or other attractions, shopping and dinner at a typical local restaurant. Overnight at hotel.

WHAT TO TAKE

Hotels with breakfast, tours where included, entrance fees to museums and archaeological sites, transportation, transfers on arrival and departure and lunches during full day tours as well as official guides in the main sites. B-Breakfast / L- Lunch / D- Dinner

Meals in the main cities, alcoholic beverages, extras, taxes, tips, laundry services, additional tours, insurance and airline tickets.

– Good walking shoes (rubber soles)

– Standard clothing used for travelling outdoor worldwide

– Light outdoor gear

– Rain protection gear, sun protection and insect repellent

– Warmer clothes especially in the months of May – July when temperatures can vary from hot days to freezing nights. In the– altitude layered clothing systems are best for Peru’s diversity.

Personal first aid kit. On each trip we carry a medical kit but we suggest a small personal first-aid kit for bruises and blisters. A knee and ankle brace are sometimes useful especially if you suffer from weak knees or ankles. Include any special medication your doctor might suggest for you.
