This multi-day trek explores some of the most remote and dramatic landscapes of the Vilcanota mountain range, combining highland communities, glacial valleys, and high mountain passes. The route leads toward the base of the mighty Apu Ausangate, following ancient trails traditionally used by shepherds and llama caravans.

Early morning departure from Cusco, traveling through the fertile Vilcanota Valley to the town of Checacupe. After visiting the colonial church of Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción, we continue ascending toward the Pitumarca Valley via the spectacular Japura Gorge, arriving in Chilca. We are welcomed by members of the local community and enjoy a short, easy walk to the first Tambo. Time to relax and enjoy traditional music performed by the people of Chilca.

The hike begins around 08:30 a.m., crossing the wide Huchuy Phinaya Valley, surrounded by glaciated peaks and open puna landscapes. The trail gradually ascends toward Mount Mariposa, following traditional paths used by llamas and alpacas. After crossing glacial moraines and skirting high-altitude lagoons, we arrive at Machuracay Tambo Lodge, located at the foot of Apu Ausangate beside the distinctive Chocolate Lagoon.

Early ascent to Palomani Pass (5,200 m), offering breathtaking views of Ausangate’s glaciers. The descent continues toward Ausangatecocha Lagoon and through the Surapata Valley, with views of the red sandstone formations of Vinicunca. At the end of the hike, private transport returns us to Cusco.
