What Is Laguna Churup?

Laguna Churup is a glacial lake located east of Huaraz in Peru’s Ancash Region. Fed by snowmelt from the surrounding peaks, the lake is renowned for its striking blue-green coloration, which changes throughout the day depending on sunlight and weather conditions.

Many visitors refer to it as the “Seven Colors Lake” because of the variety of shades reflected on its surface, ranging from deep blue to emerald and turquoise. The varying colors are caused by a combination of light, weather conditions, and “glacial flour,” a type of sediment that stays on the water’s surface and reflects sunlight to varying degrees, creating multiple hues. The sediment comes from bedrock ground into fine dust by the action of the glaciers that feed the lake. The changing colors and reflection-filled waters make it particularly popular among photographers.

The lake is part of the protected ecosystem of Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exceptional mountain landscapes and biodiversity. Many of Peru’s most exciting trekking adventures take place in this region.

Why Visit Laguna Churup

Laguna Churup offers one of the best combinations of accessibility and scenery in the Cordillera Blanca. Unlike multi-day treks that require extensive planning, this destination can be reached from Huaraz in a single day.

Highlights include:

  • Spectacular turquoise waters
  • Panoramic views of the Cordillera Blanca
  • A challenging but achievable hike
  • A unique rope-assisted climbing section
  • Opportunities for photography and wildlife observation

For travelers looking to experience Peru beyond Machu Picchu, Laguna Churup provides an excellent introduction to the country's world-class mountain landscapes.

The Laguna Churup Hike Experience

The hike typically begins at Pitec, a small trailhead accessible from Huaraz by taxi or local transportation.

Trail Overview

  • Starting elevation: Approximately 3,850 m (12,630 ft)
  • Lake elevation: Approximately 4,450 m (14,600 ft)
  • Distance: Around 7 km (4.3 miles) round trip
  • Duration: 4–6 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

The trail passes through high-altitude grasslands, rocky slopes, and scenic valleys before reaching the lake. You might be able to spot wildlife such as vizcachas (an Andean rodent that resembles a cross between a squirrel and a rabbit), gray-tailed deer, and wild vicuñas grazing on distant slopes. These smaller members of the camelid family sport the most luxurious fiber in the world!

Over 120 avian species frequent this region. Look for the majestic Andean condor, Andean gulls, a variety of hummingbirds, and Torrent Ducks.

Because of the elevation gain, hikers should spend at least a day or two acclimatizing in Huaraz before attempting the trek.

The Famous Rope Section on the Laguna Churup Trail

One of the most memorable features of the Laguna Churup hike is the rope-assisted rock section located near the upper portion of the trail.

While not considered technical climbing, hikers can navigate a steep granite wall using a series of fixed ropes. This section is relatively short but challenging. As it can feel intimidating for those uncomfortable with heights, there is an alternative route that bypasses this rope section. Although those who do choose to ascend using the ropes may be rewarded with a heightened sense of adventure, both ways will get you to the goal.

What Makes Laguna Churup So Unique

Although many of the lakes in the Cordillera Blanca are beautiful, Laguna Churup stands out for its combination of dramatic scenery, variably-hued waters, and accessibility. Unlike more remote destinations, the lake can be visited independently in a single day.

The turquoise water is framed by steep granite cliffs and rugged mountain peaks, creating a landscape that seems almost surreal.

Best Time to Visit Laguna Churup

The best time to visit Laguna Churup is during the dry season, which generally runs from May through September.

Dry Season Advantages

  • Clear mountain views
  • Safer trail conditions
  • Better photography opportunities
  • Lower chance of rain

The rainy season, typically from November through March, can make the trail slippery and reduce visibility.
