iquitos peru

Iquitos Peru, located in the Peruvian Amazon, is the largest non-island city in the world that is accessible only by boat or air. Inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years, it became the center of the rubber boom in the late 19thcentury. Today, it’s the starting point for boat expeditions to some of the most species-rich places on earth, including the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, which is home to over 1000 animal species!

Facts About Iquitos Peru

European settlers in the late 19th/ early 20th century, known as “rubber barons” grew rich through exploiting natives of the region in the rubber trade. These same settlers commissioned Gustav Eiffel, of Eiffel Tower fame, to build the famous “Iron Building,” located near Iquitos’ Plaza de Armas.

The Amazon River begins where the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers converge, near the city of Nauta, located 100 km. south of Iquitos. Nauta is the only city that connects to Iquitos by road.

One of the most fascinating animals found in the Iquitos region is the Amazon River Dolphin, known for its pink color. This dolphin is the subject of indigenous legends: they are said to be able to shape-shift and consort with humans at night, returning to the water when dawn arrives.

The sprawling Belén Market is one of the largest open-air markets in Peru, where you can get a glimpse into the diverse offerings of the jungle. A wide variety of fresh fish, reptiles, game meat, medicinal herbs, exotic fruits and vegetables, and live animals of all kinds are on display.

In recent years, there has been an expansion of seekers who come to Iquitos for spiritual retreats, which often include ceremonies with local shamans and feature the use of Ayahuasca, tobacco, and special diets meant to clear negative energies and help participants in their search for inner wisdom.
