Arequipa, or “La Ciudad Blanca” as is it is best known, is the third most visited tourist destination in Peru. The region is distinguished by its beautiful buildings and countless places to visit, including monuments and volcano treks.
Some of the most visited tourist destinations in Arequipa are:
The Cathedral Basilica
The Cathedral Basilica was built during the 15th century. It’s most interesting characteristic is the material with which it was constructed, volcanic stone and brick. The Cathedral is considered the main sanctuary of the city, occupying the entire north side of the Plaza de Armas. It is a great first stop for tourists visiting the city of Arequipa, as it’s also near many well-known Arequipa restaurants.
From the Yanahuara Viewpoint, it’s possible to glimpse the city of Arequipa as well as a magnificent panoramic view of the volcanoes (Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu). When there, look for the engravings of famous Arequipeñas like Mariano Melgar and Mario Vargas Llosa on the walls that surround the viewpoint.
Yura Hot Springs
Located 27 kilometers from the city on the slopes of the Chachani Volcano, the Yura Hot Springs are an excellent destination for some post-trekking R&R. There are a total of 18 thermal baths. The therapeutic properties of the Yura Hot Springs attract thousands of tourists each year. Don’t miss this unique attraction during your trip to Arequipa.
Trekking the Colca Canyon
The Colca Canyon trek is ideal for trekking enthusiasts, as it does require a high degree of trekking experience. Expect to trek for approximately 7 hours each day. The path includes everything from steep descents, much-welcome flat ground, and steady climbs. It’s worth noting that the Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon on the planet. For this reason, it’s a popular activity that should be booked before you arrive in Arequipa.
