huaraz peru

Capital of Peru’s Ancash Department, Huaraz Peru is situated more than 3,000 meters (9842 feet) above sea level. The stupendous snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, the world’s tallest tropical mountain range, looms over its eastern horizon. Huarascán National Park in the Cordillera Blanca encompasses areas of pristine wilderness including spectacular views, glacial lakes, rugged mountains, and abundant wildlife, including spectacled bears, Andean condors, and the ferocious jaguar.

Facts about Huaraz Peru

Trekkers from all over the world converge on Huaraz to take advantage of the amazing hiking opportunities they can find in this area. Mt. Huascarán, Peru’s tallest mountain, stands at over 22,000 feet tall. It takes around three weeks to complete the ascent up this giant of the Andes.

Artesonraju, a pyramid-shaped mountain in the Cordlillera Blanca, is a shorter climb than Huascarán. This icily beautiful peak stands at over 19,600 ft. and is thought to be the inspiration for the Paramount movie logo, which show a very similar-looking mountain peak surrounded by stars.

Pastoruri Glacier is a cirque glacier, meaning that it is shaped like a bowl. It is located in the Southern Cordillera Blanca and is among the few glaciers left in tropical South America. It is receding rapidly due to climate change; scientists have been experimenting using sawdust to try to slow down its recession.

Situated above the city of Huaraz, Wilcahuain Ruins dates from around 900 CE. It is believed to be a mausoleum used by the ancient Wari culture of Peru. It consists of a three-level stone building; the different levels are thought to represent the underworld, the human realm, and the heavens, where the gods make their home.

There are quite a few day hikes available around Huaraz. One of these is Laguna Parón, an icy blue glacial lake that is both gorgeous and easily accessible. A hike around the lake takes around an hour, and it is a good beginning trek to acclimatize to the altitude in preparation for more strenuous adventures.
