Although the country is in the equatorial region, its weather varies due to the geographical diversity (coast, highlands, Amazon) and to the cold current of Humboldt in winter and the warm current El Niño in summer.
The highlands
Generally have a spring climate all year round and between the months of November to march.Rain can be expected on any day, but is more prevalent in the afternoonsThe sun can be very hot and travelers should come provided with hats, sunglasses and sun block with SPF 30 or higher.
On the Coast
The Coast is warmer and subject to rain at any time.Temperatures vary from 21°C to 30°C due to its tropical vegetation and environment, with high relative humidity.
In the Sierra (highlands)
The Andes have usually a rainless winter that runs from April to October and a rainy season that lasts from November to March, being heaviest in January – February.
In the highlands temperatures (from 10°C to 25°C) have accentuated variations during the day, with sudden temperature falls after sunset.
In the Amazon Rainforest
The Amazonia can be stifling, the temperature can easily reach 38 ºC and the yearly average precipitations are as high as 2030 mm. It is crisscrossed by streams and rivers that drain from the Andes.
In the Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands have a dry subtropical climate.December and January are generally hot months and July to November are cooler.The temperature in the archipelago varies between 18° and 22° Centigrade (66° to 71° Fahrenheit.) |
