Inca Trails and Weavers above the Sacred Valley

This short trek begins at a rarely visited Inca site called Pumamarca and traverses spectacular inter-Andean valleys filled with queñua forests, spectacular lakes and high mountain scenery. Over the high pass we begin our descent past farmlands and more queñua forests towards the colorful community of Patacancha, where the traditional way of dressing has changed little in the past centuries.    All the textiles are made using natural dyes and fibers, return to Ollantaytambo.

Day 1 CUSCO / PUMAMARCA / CHOQUECHACA

We leave Cusco early in the morning for a 3 hour drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas past Ollantaytambo and up a side valley until we reach the ruins of Pumamarca at 3,000 m.a.s.l. After a short visit of this archaeological complex we begin our trek towards the Choquechaca valley, past forests of queñua and other native species. (Trekking: 4 hours).

DAY 2 CHOQUECHACA / HUQUI

We begin our day trekking up the valley until we reach the Choquechaca pass at 4,300m.a.s.l. after a slow descent in a northeasterly direction we reach the lake of Azulcocha (4,100m) surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery with alpacas and llamas. We continue along towards the Cchacahuachana pass (4,300 m) and down to our camp at Huqui (4,000m.a.s.l). Trekking: 7 hours

DAY 3 HUQUI / PATACANCHA / HUILLOC / OLLANTAYTAMBO

After a morning visit to some family homes in this colorful community, we will begin our trek past community farms with a chance to see locals working the fields with traditional tools such as the chaquitaclla.   We will hike past queñua forests and several streams on our way up to the pass at 4,400 m from where we will have spectacular views of the snow capped peaks of Veronica, Salkantay, Huayanay, Tirijuay, Huayruro among others.  We begin our descent in a northwesterly direction towards Huilloc (3,400 m.a.s.l).  Here we will visit the Textile Center, where traditional weaving techniques are taught, using natural dyes and fibers and conserving native designs of the valley of Patacancha.  Lunch in the vicinity.  Our transport will pick us up to return to Ollantaytambo in the afternoon.
