Puno

Altitude: 3,827m. / 12,556 ft.

Best time to visit: April – November

Although not especially attractive in itself, this lakeside city is the gateway to some of southern Peru’s most awe-inspiring natural scenarios, traditional towns and fascinating local cultures. Its most famous attraction is Lake Titicaca where one can visit the Uros on their floating reed islands, the traditional communities of the Islands of Taquile and Amantani, and the coastal community of Llachon from where you can launch unique sea kayaking adventures on the highest navigable lake in the world. Not far from Puno lies the town of Lampa, the colonial jewel of southern Peru, which thanks to isolation from the railroad connecting Cusco and Puno, has managed to remain practically untouched in the past four centuries. The Tinajani canyon nearby offers jaw-dropping landscapes with mysterious rock formations towering over the valley floor. High up on the altiplano, Puno is breathtaking not only for its natural scenery, but also for its altitude!

Highlights:

  • Lake Titicaca & Llachon
  • Lampa
  • Trekking the Cordillera Carabaya
  • Hiking in the Tinajani Canyon
  • Rafting the Tambopata River
