The ancient capital of the Chachapoya civilization has a fascinating history, having been occupied by the Incas and later the Spaniards. An off the beaten path destination which is difficult to reach, as today it is only accessible by unpaved roads via Chiclayo or Cajamarca. Its narrow, cobble-stone streets and charming Plaza de Armas make for a picturesque, quiet and friendly town from where you can explore the spellbinding archaeological sites nearby of which the best known is the commanding fortress of Kuelap. Nestled in the cloud forest of northern Peru, this mostly unexplored terrain offers some of Peru’s most intriguing and recondite archaeological ruins, not to mention the recently discovered waterfalls of Gocta – the third highest in the world!
