Leaving from Puno we drive all day to our put-in point at San Juan del Oro. As we descend from mountain scenery past small settlements of migrant farmers we slowly enter the rainforest environment with a chance to see wildlife and experience Class III- V rapids until we reach the lowland rainforest and get picked up by a dugout canoe to end in Puerto Maldonado and overnight at a rainforest lodge.
Note: Extra nights in Puno prior to program can be arranged. Please let us know if you want a pre-trip or post-trip extension in Cusco or any other part of Peru. |

| Day 1 PUNO/CUYO-CUYO/PUTINAPUNCO (Sunday) |
| |
| We depart from Puno very early, heading on the main road to Cusco past Juliaca and Pucyura. From here we take the detour towards Azangaro the passing villages of Saman, Arapa and Munani to finally reach Cuyo Cuyo in the afternoon at 3,000 m.a.s.l. /9,840 ft. During the bus ride we will have views of the surrounding puna country side (highland savannah) and the andean communities of herders and weavers. Leaving Cuyo Cuyo we descend into the cloud forest passing through Sandia and San Juan del Oro to finally reach our put-in point at Putinapunco at 2,400 m.a.s.l. / 7,872 ft. Here we unload the gear, pack the rafts strap everything on the boats and set up camp. |

| Day 2 /11 ON THE TAMBOPATA (Monday) |
| |
The daily routine will include about 5-6 hours of rafting with an hour for lunch stops en route, setting up camps on exposed beaches along the river. We will scout the most important rapids as a safety precaution. Since the Tambopata river is a large drainage that starts in the Peru-Bolivian border, when it rains in the mountains the river can rise in very little time and from one day to another its volume of water can change. It is one of the most inaccessible and fascinating rivers of South America. This unspoiled region has an abundance and variety of flora and fauna including rare and endangered species.
As this region is more remote than the Manu National Park we will not be exposed to the sights of mankind (e.g. miners, scientists, tourist lodges or even other tourists). The Tambopata river is a paradise for giant butterflies, river otters, various species of monkeys and bird-life, as well as jaguars, tapirs, caimans and capybaras. Fish are abundant and if you enjoy fishing you are welcome to bring your gear, but take into consideration our space limitations.
Our journey is accompanied by an experienced river guide who will explain about the interesting habitats, lifestyles and the incredible world of the forest, and will always be answering your personal questions. We also include half day treks into the surrounding wilderness. This is a great time to photograph. All of these beautiful scenes and once-in-a lifetime opportunities only complement the adrenaline thrill of running class III - IV rapids.
Paddle power is more logical than the motorized canoes, as the wildlife is disturbed by the unnatural noise. The river slows down towards the last few days and the terrain opens. The last day on the river we will be met by a motorized canoe at the confluence of the Rio Tabara and it will take us to Puerto Maldonado but if time permits we will make a last camp just before the Tambopata Macaw Lick (Collpa de Guacamayos), so at dawn the next morning we can observe the magnificent bird-life. Then the motorized canoe trip will bring us past some of the lodges on the lower Tambopata river until we reach Puerto Maldonado by vehicle in the afternoon and transfer to our hotel. Overnight and a chance to relax in the afternoon. Dinner on your own. |
