Overlooked by the spectacular snowcapped peak of Chimborazo (at 6,310 m / 20,702 ft. Ecuador's highest peak) Riobamba – the former capital of Ecuador – is known as the Sultan of the Andes. With its colonial architecture and cobble-stone streets, Riobamba's Old Town is a favorite among foreign tourists, with Parque Pedro Vicente Maldonado being a particularly popular destination. Riobamba is where Ecuador’s first constitution was written and is therefore known as the birthplace of the republic. It boasts a city center with colonial churches and buildings, and is the starting point of the train ride passing the famous Devil's Nose.
