The Cotopaxi volcano – allegedly the highest active volcano in the world – is located in the Cotopaxi province, close to its capital city, Latacunga. Whether you get close to the peak or not, the view of its perfectly shaped, snow-covered cone is stunning. The national park protects a large area surrounding the volcano, and is home to wild horses, deer, some captive llamas and several rare including the puma and Andean condor. The park includes forests and plains, which are home several species of birds such as blue-billed pointed ducks, Andean gulls, hummingbirds, and mammals such as rabbits, gazelles, paramo wolves, and foxes.
