Trujillo

Altitudes: 3m.a.s.l/ 9,84 ft.

Best Time to visit: All year

Trujillo is a beautiful city on the Northern Coast, founded in 1534 by the conquistador Diego de Almagro it became the administrative capital of the north in the Viceroyalty of Peru. The Spanish built spectacular churches with altars of gold and filled the city with convents and schools, buildings with artistic gates, sunlit patios, rooms with finely carved furniture and cabinets embossed with leather.

In 1619 an earthquake destroyed the city. Years later, in 1624, began a new era of a rebuilding boom with palaces and the opening of the seminar and the Jesuit school.  During the eighteenth century, because of numerous pirate attacks, walls were built that are still visible today.  Spend some time in the coastal resort of Huanchaco with its famous Caballitos de Totora (reed horses), precursor of the surfboard.

The friendly and open spirit of its people is famous, as is its varied and delicious food. In its lively streets, full of small shops, you can visit several colonial monuments.  The city is also surrounded by archaeological sites of great importance and the pre-Incan origins of the Moche and Chimu cultures; great adobe structures of impressive dimensions similar to the pyramids of the Nile.
